The Fearless Fifty-Nine, Robert Hamilton

Robert Hamilton was the 53 year old Pecan Point and vicinity representative. Hamilton immigrated with his six brothers to North Carolina from Scotland in 1807. In 1812, he and his brothers started a very successful commercial enterprise. However, in 1834 he withdrew from the business and moved to Texas. He was considered the wealthiest man to sign the Declaration. Because of this, he was sent along with Childress to go to Washington D.C. to seek recognition of the independence of Texas and establishment of commercial relations with the United States. Upon his return to Texas, Sam Houston nominated him chief justice of Red River County. Below is a book written about the Hamilton family history by Robert’s great nephew, Patrick Hamilton Baskervill, in 1916.
