The Alamo presents: Ride for Texas Independence

SAN ANTONIO – On Feb. 24, 1836, Alamo commander William B. Travis wrote the now famous “Victory or Death” letter. Courier Albert Martin left the Alamo with the letter to ride across Texas to deliver Travis’ impassioned plea for reinforcements to the people of Texas. In 2016, as part of the 180th commemoration of the Texas Revolution, this historic ride will be recreated.

The ride will begin at the Alamo on Feb. 24, 2016, with a reenactment of the writing of the Travis letter and Albert Martin leaving the Alamo. Throughout the day there will be living history demonstrations on 19th century letter writing, printing and transportation. The ride will conclude at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site on March 5, 2016, with events at other historic sites along the way.

Dressed in period clothing, riding period saddles and for all intents and purposes, living as Texian patriots did so long ago, living historians will follow the route Travis’ famous letter took in 1836. The ride is scheduled for a ceremonial start on Alamo Plaza and will follow the old roadways through towns such as Gonzales and San Felipe and will culminate in the delivery of Travis’ letter to interpreters portraying delegates at Independence Hall in Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site.
