OUR VISION

In 2021, the Texas Legislature set out a bold vision for the Texas Historical Commission and other state agencies: to prepare for Texas’ Bicentennial in 2036 by investing in every major revolutionary and Republic site. Washington-on-the-Brazos – where the Republic of Texas began with the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence and ended 10 years later with the vote for annexation – is one of the most vital places in our state to tell this story.

The result of this vision is a $51.6 million effort that represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the birthplace of modern Texas into a world-class destination. Led by the Texas Historical Commission, this project will:

  • Share real stories about the people who lived in and led the Republic of Texas and honor the remarkable history of Washington
  • Establish Washington-on-the-Brazos as a premier destination for visitors and essential to understanding the complete story of Texas
  • Support the first-ever comprehensive archeological exploration of the Washington townsite to preserve its important history and recreate significant historic buildings
  • Restore Washington-on-the-Brazos to its rightful place of honor in the story of Texas

In support of this vision, The Texas Legislature appropriated more than $33 million in 2021 and another $7.35 million in 2023 to re-envision and transform the site with updated galleries, outdoor interpretative installations, and new compelling technology to create an extraordinary visitor experience.

Once the project is completed, the enlarged and enhanced facilities will allow the capacity to expand programming, outreach, and engagement with more diverse constituents and partners that reflect Texas’ diverse past, present, and future. Currently, the site’s annual visitation is approximately 90,000. Project designers Gallagher and Associates project that the total site attendance would increase by 34% to over 120,000 visitors annually once the project is completed.
