The Fearless Fifty-Nine, Samuel Price Carson
Samuel Price Carson was the 38 year old Pecan Point and vicinity representative. Carson led a very active political life before the Convention. He was in the North Carolina State Senate from 1822-1824 and 1834, a representative in the US Congress from 1825-1833 and a delegate to the North Carolina Constitutional Convention in 1835. He was only one of two delegates at the Convention that had served in the US Congress. After the convention, he was nominated as ad interim president of the Republic of Texas but was defeated by David G. Burnet. He became secretary of state instead but only for a few months because of health reasons. Carson County is named after him.
