LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings from the Birthplace of Texas:

Thank you for visiting our website and taking the time to learn more about the Washington on the Brazos Historical Foundation. As we work to preserve our Texas history, share our story through educational programs, and the renovation of the Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site, we encourage you to join our efforts and learn more about the Birthplace of Texas.

As our Board, volunteers and staff work to preserve this historic site and its rich history, we are committed to honoring the 59 signers of the declaration, their families and descendants is one of our core missions. Many other people and places in Texas played crucial roles in the birth of the Republic of Texas, but the signing of the declaration of independence and drafting of its first constitution are unique to Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Our state historic site is currently evolving throughout this renovation, parts of our park will be closed but the Barrington Living History Farm will remain open. A $57.4 million renovation began in fall 2023 to bring to life the events that took place at Washington-on-the-Brazos in 1836 and explore the significance of the Convention of 1836 within the story of the Texas Revolution and Washington’s role as the last capital of the Republic of Texas. Thanks to support from the Texas Legislature, significant donors and volunteers that have and continued to support our efforts in educating visitors about early Texan society, culture, politics, and agriculture. Our vision is to ensure that Texas' present and future can benefit from the lessons of its history.

We encourage to join our efforts and support our mission to preserve and share the history of Where Texas Became Texas!

Thank you –
Joel Romo
