CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

For 100 years, the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site has preserved the rich history of the town of Washington and inspired visitors with stories of early Texan society, culture, politics, and agriculture. Owned and managed by the Texas Historical Commission, the site welcomes over 90,000 visitors annually.

Several years ago, with an eye toward the Texas Bicentennial in 2036, leaders from the Texas Historical Commission and across the state began to dream about how to transform the historic site – the birthplace of modern Texas – into a premier destination that uses the lens of history to teach visitors about the people who shaped our early history and lessons of leadership and courage in the face of adversity and change.

The ambitious $51.6 million vision, crafted by the Texas Historical Commission, will revolutionize the entire site, creating a comprehensive and dynamic visitor journey. This transformation will allow visitors to walk the streets of Washington, experiencing reproductions of pivotal landmarks in Texas history. These new exhibits will bring to life the stories of all who shaped our Republic – from Sam Houston and other Revolutionary heroes to shopkeepers, enslaved individuals, Tejanos, indigenous people, and countless families whose rich histories have been lost to us until now.

The Washington on the Brazos Historical Foundation has committed to raising the final $10.4 million needed for this vision and has launched the Where Texas Became Texas Campaign. We invite you to join us!
