Celebrate Texas Independence at "Independence Eve"

March 1

Courier after the victory

After the victory at San Jacinto, Ross picked up President Burnet and his cabinet and took them to view the site of the battle at the request of Secretary of War Thomas J. Rusk. The Yellow Stone then steamed back to Velasco on May 3 with the president and cabinet members along with their printing press. General Houston, Santa Anna and some 80 Mexican prisoners were also on board. It is said that Burnet, never a fan of Houston’s, refused to let him aboard the boat but Captain Ross would not budge until Houston was brought on board. Houston said of the captain, “Captain Ross and his crew enabled me to save Texas.”

The painting is of the Yellow Stone by Karl Bodmer in 1839.
