The Fearless Fifty-Nine, Asa Brigham

Asa Brigham was the 46 year old Brazoria representative. Brigham was a staple in Brazoria where at some point or another he was the treasurer, on the board of health, kept a ferry with a mercantile business, a stockholder in the railroad, a land owner where he raised livestock and helped establish the Masonic lodge. Along with Brazoria, he lived in Houston and Austin and even served as mayor of Austin in 1842. His most significant contribution to the Republic of Texas though was serving as its first treasurer from 1836-1840, 1842-1844. The picture is of a marker at Washington Cemetery honoring Brigham for his contribution to the Masons.
